The Golden Zone
The Golden Zone is Mazatlan’s main tourist district, where you can shop, party and sunbathe on several popular beaches. These include Playa Sabalo and Playa Gaviotas, as well as the more tranquil Playa Los Cerritos.
While most of the beachfront resorts in this part of town are geared towards overnight guests, there are some that allow day pass access as well. This is a great way to chill out at the pool and beach without paying full price for a room.
Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay is a 20-acre palm tree-laden beachfront property with a sprawling pool and prime coastal views from its suites and villas. Recent travelers liked the accommodations’ functional decor, private balconies and kitchenettes.
Best Western on the Water is a reliable mid-level chain hotel with a beachfront location in the Golden Zone. While the rooms are dated, rates here are often less than $200 double, which is a good deal in this resort city.
Beaches
Mazatlan is home to 21 kilometers of white sand beaches and a sea of turquoise-blue water. It’s a favorite destination for travelers and locals alike.
A handful of all-inclusive hotels offer a beachfront setting in the city’s Zona Dorada. Some are more upscale, while others offer a family-friendly slant.
The Riu Emerald Bay is one of the largest resorts in town. It has a massive beach, three large pools, numerous restaurants and bars, and a large spa.
Rooms here are typical of the Riu brand, ranging from simple and dated to more upmarket. They have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and private balconies with optional sea views.
Guests rave about the resort’s spacious suites and oceanfront pool. However, many travelers note that the property’s location is a bit out of the way for Mazatlan’s more tourist-trafficked Golden Zone.
Excursions
Whether you want to spend your vacation sun worshipping at one of the area’s most popular beaches or exploring the city’s historic center, there are plenty of excursions in Mazatlan that will add value and fun to your trip.
Take a half-day tour of Old Town (also known as the Centro Historico) to discover stunning architecture, leafy plazas, and some great museums. A knowledgeable guide can help you navigate this protected area and make the most of your time there.
Another popular tour in this coastal city is a whale watching excursion, where you can get up close and personal with some of the world’s largest mammals. This trip lasts three to four hours and gives you the chance to see humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins, seals, and seabirds.
If you’re looking for a more active excursion, try horseback riding along the beach. You’ll get a great workout and enjoy the stunning views of the ocean as you trot along the sand.
Nightlife
With a mix of modern comforts, a fine beach, and old culture, Mazatlan is one of Mexico’s best all-in-one holiday destinations. You can enjoy a fun-filled holiday in Mazatlan by swimming, snorkeling, fishing, golfing, biking, shopping, and eating.
For a night out on the town, you can head to a nightclub or party with friends on the beach. There are plenty of local bars and restaurants that offer a night out with live music, mariachi bands, and traditional dancing.
If you want to experience a cultural drinking experience, try Edgar’s Bar and Cantina. This cool vintage bar has been serving ice-cold cerveza since 1949 and a live band plays traditional Mexican music on weekends.
For something a bit more luxurious, Ramada Resort Mazatlan is a great choice. Located in the touristy Golden Zone, it offers a large freeform pool and a wide stretch of Playa Camaron beach. Rooms are simple, but have a number of modern amenities, including Wi-Fi.
